Quality Manager

OVERVIEW: Sustainable Bioproducts, a Chicago-based biotech startup, was founded in 2013 with the mission of creating delicious foods that nourish people and protect our planet. We trace our origins to the volcanic springs of Yellowstone National Park, where research conducted in partnership with NASA led us to discover a ground-breaking, sustainable source of protein. The Quality Manager will be responsible for developing quality management systems and maintaining the quality program to assure that all food quality standards are met. The successful candidate will create and implement quality processes, build and manage the QA/QC laboratory for the pilot plant operations, ultimately transferring these programs and practices to commercial scale manufacturing. The successful candidate will be dedicated to safety and will exhibit adaptability, and determination. Must be able to thrive in a start-up environment with the unique challenges of a small, rapidly growing and evolving business.

Responsibilities

  • Devise and establish the company’s quality procedures, standards and specifications

  • Manage the quality program and ensure that customer quality requirements are met

  • Initially responsible for building the QA/QC lab and staff for pilot operations, including the strategy for external testing

  • Interface with external testing laboratories and manage data generated

  • Supervise the testing of finished products for functionality using product application expertise

  • Develop quality inspection procedures based on industry and regulatory standards

  • Document, investigate, and remedy the cause of product deficiencies

  • Establish and maintain controls and electronic documentation procedures

  • Monitor specifications by gathering relevant data, maintaining clear and detailed records, and produce statistical reports

  • Work closely with the Food Applications team to incorporate new learnings into product quality specifications 

  • Serve as a quality liaison for the R&D team developing new products and processes

  • Work with production staff to improve procedures, standards and systems.

  • Work with purchasing staff to establish quality requirements from external suppliers

  • Develop analytical programs and provide routine testing for the characterization of raw materials, in-process materials and finished products, including hands-on activities as needed, such as equipment setup, repair and maintenance and general laboratory activities

  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures

  • Perform other duties, as assigned

Education:

  • Required – BS degree in Biology, Food science or related field

Experience:

  • Required – 10+ years of experience in food or life sciences

  • Required – 5+ years of experience supervising or managing a quality department

  • Required – Experience in food quality control, test method development and validation, control schemes and writing procedures.

  • Desired –  Familiarity with analytical instrument maintenance, troubleshooting and repair.
