Process Engineer - Fermentation

OVERVIEW: Sustainable Bioproducts, a Chicago-based biotech startup, was founded in 2013 with the mission of creating delicious foods that nourish people and protect our planet. We trace our origins to the volcanic springs of Yellowstone National Park, where research conducted in partnership with NASA led us to discover a ground-breaking, sustainable source of protein. The Process Engineer will be initially engaged in the design, construction and operation of a pilot plant to produce a novel food product, with emphasis on upstream process operations and novel application of fermentation engineering. The position will be located in Chicago.

Process Engineer Responsibilities

  • The position will initially be engaged in the design and construction of a fermentation pilot plant to produce a novel food product using both traditional and non-traditional fermentation technology

  • Primary responsibility for process engineering for all upstream unit operations, including development, optimization and trouble shooting

  • Working directly with the R&D and food applications teams to incorporate new developments into the process, including new process and products

  • Technology transfer to subsequent stages of commercial manufacturing

  • Involved with defining scope and execution of small capital project associated with the above activities

Education/Experience:

  • BS degree in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering

  • 3 or more years experience of fermentation process engineering at pilot or commercial scale

Professional Qualifications:

  • Specific working knowledge of fermentation principles and practice

  • Broad understanding of fermentation and aseptic equipment and operations

  • Experience in fermentation process development, control schemes and optimization

  • Operational experience at pilot or commercial scale

  • Small capital project experience

  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Emphasis on personal transparency and accountability

  • Comfortable working in a start-up environment

  • Sound judgement when faced with uncertainty and ambiguity

  • Self-motivated by problem solving and inherent curiosity to understand how things work
