Director of manufacturing
OVERVIEW: Sustainable Bioproducts, a Chicago-based biotech startup, was founded in 2013 with the mission of creating delicious foods that nourish people and protect our planet. We trace our origins to the volcanic springs of Yellowstone National Park, where research conducted in partnership with NASA led us to discover a ground-breaking, sustainable source of protein. The Director, Manufacturing & Engineering role is responsible for the engineering, construction and operations to commercialize Sustainable Bioproducts’ technology, initially in pilot stages in the Chicago area.
Build and lead a manufacturing team for all stages of pilot and early commercial operations, including production, operations, maintenance and logistics.
Assuring best practices are applied to production, quality and safety and that all standards are met
Define and direct process engineering team in optimizing production technology and associated economics at all pilot stages.
Work closely with quality, regulatory and product development functions to meet corporate goals, including timelines, for product launches.
Build and lead project engineering team responsible for the design, engineering and construction of commercial manufacturing.
Work with external parties for project design, engineering and construction for future phases of the pilot and commercial operations.
Establish a co-manufacturing organization to convert raw ingredient into “ready-to-eat” product.
Minimum 10 years’ experience in food manufacturing environment in a leadership position (required)
Demonstrated success in the deployment of new technology and/or new manufacturing systems to food production processes (required)
Process and capital project engineering experience (required)
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Food Science, Engineering, or related field (required)
Experience with large scale industrial fermentation processes (preferred)
Experience with process automation in the food industry (preferred)
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
Emphasis on personal transparency and accountability
Comfortable working in a start-up environment
Sound judgement when faced with uncertainty and ambiguity
Self-motivated by problem solving and inherent curiosity to understand how things work
